Small Groups
In his letters in the New Testament, Paul says that we, being many, are the body of Christ, and individually we are members of one another. One source of the church’s power has always been the depth of its community, and we read in the book of Acts that the church “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, and to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” The power of the early church’s community and their willingness to meet each other’s needs (Acts 2:44-5) is a witness that is especially needed in a culture that has been so wounded by loneliness, isolation, and cynicism.
Small groups have long been the church’s means of recovering and participating in the power of the early church’s fellowship. Our small groups eat together, learn together, pray together, serve together, and bear one another’s burdens. We train and encourage our small group leaders so that they can be effective in drawing out these elements within each group. Because of the unique challenges of Austin’s geography and traffic, we focus on geography rather than affinity in our small groups.
